With 32,76,697 people at the 2011 Census, Indore was the 105th most populous of India's 640 districts and the most populous of Madhya Pradesh's 50. That is 4.5% of everyone living in Madhya Pradesh at the time.

Literacy stood at 80.87%, 7.9 points above the national 72.98% — 11.6 points above the Madhya Pradesh average. That ranked it 145th of 640 districts nationally. The gap between male and female literacy was 13.2 points, 3.0 points below the national gap of 16.3.

The sex ratio was 928 women per 1,000 men (level with the Madhya Pradesh figure of 931). Among children aged 0–6 the ratio was 901, 17 below the national 918.

The largest urban settlement was the part of Indore (M Corp.) falling inside the district, with 19,64,086 people. That put 74.1% of the district in urban areas, 46.5 points above the Madhya Pradesh share of 27.6%.
