With 25,43,243 people at the 2011 Census, West was the 168th most populous of India's 640 districts and the 3rd most populous of Delhi's 9. That is 15.1% of everyone living in Delhi at the time.

Literacy stood at 86.98%, 14.0 points above the national 72.98% — 0.8 points above the Delhi average. That ranked it 48th of 640 districts nationally. The gap between male and female literacy was 8.6 points, 7.6 points below the national gap of 16.3.

The sex ratio was 875 women per 1,000 men (7 above the Delhi figure of 868). Among children aged 0–6 the ratio was 872, 46 below the national 918.

West contained 14 towns — 3 with a municipal body of some kind, and 11 classed as census towns, meaning they met the census's urban test without having one. The largest urban settlement was the part of DMC (U) falling inside the district, with 10,65,969 people. That put 99.8% of the district in urban areas, 2.3 points above the Delhi share of 97.5%.
